Could AI Agents Kill Apps? Here’s What’s Coming

by Jabir Hussain, Imaginary Hub X Newsletter – April 11, 2025

Picture this: you’re planning a dream vacation. Flights, hotels, cabs—everything’s sorted without opening a single app. No toggling between Skyscanner, Booking.com, or Uber. Just you, chatting with a super-smart AI agent that handles it all. Sounds like sci-fi? It’s closer than you think. In today’s Imaginary Hub X deep dive, we’re exploring the rise of AI agents and whether they’re about to send apps to the history books. Buckle up!

What’s an AI Agent, Anyway?

Think of AI agents as digital sidekicks with brains. Give them a task—say, “Plan my trip to Bali”—and they’ll book flights, snag hotel deals, and even flag sketchy login attempts on your accounts. Unlike apps, which need you to navigate their menus, AI agents work independently, pulling info from other systems and learning as they go. They’re like having a personal assistant who never sleeps.

The Game-Changer

AI agents aren’t just for personal convenience—they’re shaking up industries. Take cybersecurity: in 2023, over 5.5 million jobs went unfilled globally, leaving companies exposed to hackers. AI agents can step in, spotting threats like weird logins or traffic spikes in real-time, no coffee breaks needed. Or marketing: what once took a team of six can now be handled by one person and an AI agent in under an hour. Fewer jobs? Maybe. But for sectors starving for talent, it’s a lifeline.

The Consumer Angle

On your phone, AI agents are already flexing. Amazon’s testing a “Buy for Me” feature—can’t find it on their site? Their AI hunts it down elsewhere and places the order, all without leaving Amazon. Reset a password, crunch a spreadsheet, or design a poster? There’s an AI agent for that. No app-hopping required. But here’s the catch: if we stick to one AI-powered platform, other apps could lose traffic, sales, and data. Bad news for them.

Are Apps Doomed?

The AI agent market’s exploding—$5 billion in 2024, headed to $47 billion by 2030. That’s a 45% annual growth rate! Some predict a future where agents like Midjourney (for graphics) or Mindtrip (for travel) replace apps entirely. Even big names like Satya Nadella see it coming. But hold up—tech revolutions rarely wipe out the old guard.

Remember when smartphones were supposed to kill PCs? Yet here we are, typing on laptops. Or when Slack was going to bury email? Email’s still thriving—360 billion sent daily in 2024, set to hit 400 billion by 2027. Why? Habits die hard, and apps have troves of data AI agents need. Instead of dying, apps might evolve, baking AI smarts into their own systems to keep you hooked.

The Catch

One AI agent might plan your trip, but it won’t file your taxes or edit your videos. You’d need different agents for different jobs—sound familiar? It’s not so different from juggling apps today. Unless a do-it-all super-agent arrives, apps and agents will likely coexist, pushing each other to get better. That’s a win for us, right?

So, Imaginary Hub X readers, what’s your take? Will AI agents make apps obsolete, or are we just seeing the next chapter of tech teamwork? Hit us up with your thoughts!
